Sonia is an experienced company director and lawyer.
Sonia has a Bachelor of Laws and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Melbourne and is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (FACID).
Sonia currently runs her own commercial legal practice Sonia Petering Lawyer in combination with her non executive roles and discrete projects. She has been a non executive director in a number of different and highly regulated industries (financial services, insurance, water and health, professional services and payments) since 2000. Her legal firm specializes in acting for landowners in relation to native vegetation offsets.
She is currently a director of listed companies Qantm IP Ltd (ASX:QIP) (intellectual property) and Virtus Health Ltd (ASX:VRT) (IVF provider) where she is Chair of the Board, TAL (Australia’s largest life insurance company) and Cuscal Ltd (payments). Sonia also undertakes various other assignments such as assisting the Department of Environment, Land Water and Planning in appointment of non executive directors to the 19 water corporation boards across Victoria and the Department of Education and Training in appointment of non executive directors to the TAFE boards across Victoria.
Sonia is a member of various board committees, (Risk, Audit and Remuneration) and currently chairs the Remuneration and Nominations Committee at TAL, the Audit Risk and Compliance Committee at QIP and the Board Risk Committee at Cuscal.
Sonia is an experienced Chair, currently Chair of the Board of Virtus Health Ltd since November 2019 and chaired the Board of Rural Finance Corporation of Victoria for 6 years, serving on the board for over 11 years. She was a non executive director for Transport Accident Commission of Victoria for 9 years from 2007. Sonia was a member of the first Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry with Justice Bernard Teague and Professor John Catford from March 2014 to September 2014.
